CURRENTLY SHIPPING TO MASSACHUSETTS ONLY

Why

Inter-State Shipping

In February, Massachusetts Legislature voted to over-ride Governor Romney's veto of the new interstate shipping law potentially opening up the way for wineries producing under 30000 gallons of wine to ship out of state.  That, however, is the end of the good news. See the link from  Free The Grape on what they think of our new law.  Click Free the Grapes: To Ensure Consumer Choice in Fine Wine

Before you jump on the band wagon, understand that we first need FedEx, UPS or DHL to agree to transport wine inter/intra state. While FedEx has been shipping on a limited basis within Massachusetts, we are waiting to see if they will be willing to ship Massachusetts wines out of Massachusetts. The new law has some pretty serious penalties and restrictions and we may not FedEx, UPS or DHL very eager to get involved, especially considering that Massachusetts requires them to pay $100 per truck for each and every truck that handles alcohol. Ouch!!! And this is just the fee in Massachusetts!!! Double Ouch !!!!!

If the shippers get on board, Nashoba, like other small wineries will have to register and pay a registration fee prior to shipping into most states. Registration fees are generally $100.00 or more per state per year plus the requirement to file tax returns for all shipments.  Every state is a bit different which make it an administrative nightmare. Before we are willing to sell to customers in another state it will be important to evaluate potential sales and whether we can justify the cost of registration as well as the additional cost of filing tax returns for each state that we register. The new law is a start but the consumer will not see much change without some additional pieces falling into place.  We are waiting to see if any of the national shipping companies are going to register and begin shipping.
